3D mode
Google Earth has long had 3D models of buildings. Initially only in select cities, the mode can now be found in many areas, sometimes more detailed than others. However, attention to detail often goes downhill. Mesh models have textures mapped over them that are taken from aerial views, in order to bring out a more real render. The terrain setting allows elevation data to be added.
The complexity of work going on, coupled with numerous data sources and the smoothening of switching between them creates some unsettling events.
We can enter buildings – sometimes just to view the mesh that constructs the model framework but other times to be presented with Street View images or even personal photos. In 3D mode, not only are buildings accessible but also rocks, trees, landscapes. Google has removed many distractions including most rubbish, people, disasters and political disturbances.
But although protests and protestors are gone, havoc returns in digital form.
